Coming Home (detail), oil on canvas
Hilary Whyard trained in graphic design at Newton Park College. After teaching for a number of years she established her own design, printmaking and publishing company, Wells Head Press, which she ran for twelve years. Her work sold in many outlets both nationally and internationally and was selected regularly for the Society of Wood Engravers annual exhibition.

Working as an illustrator and children's author she had several books published by Scholastics and Points Press.

She has since become interested in painting in oils and acrylics, concentrating principally on landscape and wildlife subjects.

Until recently Hilary lived high up on the western slopes of the Malvern Hills, where she enjoyed uninterrupted views across Herefordshire to the Welsh Hills. Hilary also paints in the Cotswolds and the Severn Vale and along the British coastline.

Painting out in the field whenever possible, she also works from studies and photographs in her studio.

"I love the slow, contemplative process of painting in oils on canvas, and the immediacy of acrylics. I also enjoy combining techniques and materials, often employing skills developed in my days as a printmaker."

Hilary now lives in the French Pyrenees and has taken a break from painting in order to establish an organic smallholding. She is learning about permaculture principals and how to apply them to her land. Find out more about her land, and about the permaculture design course (in French) taking place there in August.
